Every January, the Law Society of Ontario’s Intellectual Property Law: The Year in Review brings together lawyers, agents, and innovators to examine how the past year’s decisions and trends will shape IP practice moving forward. From landmark cases to emerging issues in AI and innovation, the agenda delivers expert analysis and practical takeaways. This year also introduces a dedicated session on trade secrets, reflecting how protection strategies continue to evolve. Now in its 30th year, the 2026 program arrives at a moment where courts are moving quickly, technology is advancing even faster, and IP strategy is shifting in real time.
Andrew Currier will once again serve as a Co-Chair, joining Monique Couture of Gowling WLG and Jessica Zagar of Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. The program continues to evolve with the pace of the industry, and this year’s themes align closely with the issues shaping current IP practice.
This year’s agenda includes:
-
A comprehensive review of patents, trademarks, and copyright developments from the past year
-
A new session dedicated to trade secrets, reflecting the increased importance of confidential information in innovation-driven industries
-
Judicial insights from Federal Court judges on procedure, ethics, and litigation strategy
-
Practical guidance on the use of AI in legal workflows, including risk management and ethical considerations for practitioners
For those attending in person, the program offers a full day of discussion, practical takeaways, and the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues across the profession. It also qualifies for 5 hours and 45 minutes of Substantive CPD and 45 minutes of Professionalism.
