Velocity and PCK will once again work together to support Velocity Fund Finals $25K winners.

Perry + Currier Inc. (PCK), a leading Canadian and US patent and trademark agency that specializes in intellectual property protection for scaling innovative companies, has extended its IP sponsorship support to Velocity in 2019. This sponsorship will cover the 24th, 25th, and 26th Velocity Fund Finals (VFF).

Legal support for Velocity Fund Finals $25K winners

All 2019 VFF $25K winners will receive exclusive in-kind legal services from PCK. Specifically, each winner is entitled to 1 Lean US provisional patent application (valued at $1K) at no cost. This provides two key advantages to a startup:

  1. Provisional patent applications filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will give the startup worldwide IP protection for up to a year.
  2. The startup can delay filing a formal patent application, giving the founder(s) both time and ability to adjust course within a year.

Giving very-early-stage startups an edge

This type of support is critical as Velocity incubates startups at their very-early-stage. More often than not, these startups have yet to generate enough funds to file for a full formal patent application. Moreover, with more Velocity startups engaging in deep engineering innovation and meaningful scientific discoveries, PCK’s IP knowledge is more important than ever. “With many past VFF winners focused on deep tech and science work, we are delighted to extend our support once again. We look forward to showing each startup a unique IP commercialization path forward,” says Andrew Currier, CEO at PCK.

“PCK has done outstanding work for VFF winners over the past 2 years and we are excited that our winning startups can continue to benefit from PCK’s expertise in all matters related to IP,” says Jay Shah, Director Velocity. A total of 12 startups are expected to benefit from this support. Historically, a high percentage of winning startups have utilized this opportunity to protect the IP that they generated in order to attract angel and VC investments.
